Papers of the Mellen and related families, in particular those of Rev. John Mellen, Jr., a Congregational minister of Barnstable, Mass. The bulk of the collection is family and personal correspondence between Mellen and his wife, children, siblings, and parents, in particular his father John Mellen, Sr. and his brother-in-law Caleb Gannett. Other John Mellen papers include sermons, papers related to his tenure as manager of the Harvard lotteries in 1806 and 1811, and letters written to Artemas Ward during the American Revolution. Papers of Mellen's son-in-law Levi Frisbie include household accounts and student essays written for him while a member of the Harvard faculty (1817-22). Other families whose correspondence appears include the Ward, Henshaw (including genealogical materials), Carruth (including correspondence and bills from trips to Europe in 1854 and the 1860s), and Savage families. Bound vols. include Katharine Mellen's (later Frisbie) commonplace-book (1802); genealogical material on the Mellen family; an account book kept by Thomas Brattle in Cambridge (1785-89); and a journal/commonplace-book kept by R.B. Hinckley (1806-07).
